UnitedHealth Group Appointments

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (December 21, 2000) UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) today announced several executive appointments as part of the company’s commitment to challenge its executive leadership, strengthen and deepen its senior management team, and capitalize on existing management strength. The changes announced today will enable the company to continue to build on its momentum at both the corporate and operational levels and promote ongoing business expansion into major areas of growth.

  • Jeannine M. Rivet has been named executive vice president, UnitedHealth Group and chief executive officer of Ingenix.
  • Robert J. Sheehy has been named chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare. Patrick J. Erlandson has been appointed chief financial officer of UnitedHealth Group.
  • Reed V. Tuckson, M.D., has joined UnitedHealth Group as senior vice president, Consumer Health and Medical Care Advancement.
  • David S. Wichmann has been named to the position of president and chief operating officer, Specialized Care Services.
  • Eugene C. Cavanaugh has been named senior vice president, Operations, of Uniprise.
  • Richard J. Migliori, M.D., has been named chief clinical strategist for the Ingenix Health Intelligence business unit of Ingenix.

Jeannine M. Rivet has been named executive vice president, UnitedHealth Group. In her corporate role, Rivet will oversee enterprise-wide quality initiatives, lead efforts to optimize the distribution of services across the company’s business segments, and serve as the company’s primary representative to the pharmaceutical industry.

Rivet has also been named chief executive officer of Ingenix, the company’s business segment that provides health care informatics services, content, data and analytic products and pharmaceutical services. As CEO, she will oversee Ingenix’s continuing growth, as it serves the escalating demand for clinical, pharmaceutical, and knowledge and information services.

Since April 1998, Rivet has served as chief executive officer of UnitedHeathcare. She joined UnitedHealthcare in 1990 as vice president of Health Service Operations, was named executive vice president of UnitedHealthcare’s Health Care Services in 1994, and became UnitedHealthcare’s chief operating officer in November 1997.

Robert J. Sheehy has been named chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare, succeeding Jeannine Rivet. UnitedHealthcare provides network-based commercial, Medicare and Medicaid health and well-being services through six broad regional markets. Sheehy has served as president of UnitedHealthcare since April 1998, was chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare of Ohio from 1994 to 1998, and joined UnitedHealthcare in 1992.

Patrick J. Erlandson has been appointed chief financial officer of UnitedHealth Group. Erlandson currently serves as the company’s corporate controller and chief accounting officer. Prior to his current position, Erlandson served as vice president of Planning, Process and Information Channels. Before joining UnitedHealth Group in 1997, he was a partner with Arthur Andersen.

Erlandson will succeed Arnold Kaplan who will retire in early 2001, consistent with the retirement timeline established when he joined the company. Following his retirement, Kaplan will remain actively involved with the company, providing ongoing financial counsel to UnitedHealth Group as it continues to refine cost of capital disciplines for its operating business segments.

Reed V. Tuckson, M.D., has joined UnitedHealth Group as senior vice president, Consumer Health and Medical Care Advancement. In this corporate role, Dr. Tuckson oversees enterprise-wide efforts to improve health systems, enhance patient-physician relationships and help individuals optimize their health. Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group, Dr. Tuckson worked as senior vice president, Professional Standards, for the American Medical Association (AMA). Dr. Tuckson served as president of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science from 1991 to 1997 and was Commissioner of Public Health for the District of Columbia from 1986 to 1990. He is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Medicine and Howard University.

David S. Wichmann has assumed additional responsibilities as president and chief operating officer, Specialized Care Services, where he will be working with CEO Ron Colby. The Specialized Care Services business segment provides specialized benefits, networks, services and resources through an expanding portfolio of companies. Wichmann, who currently serves as senior vice president, Corporate Development, UnitedHealth Group, has led the company’s recent large-scale process improvement initiative.

Eugene C. Cavanaugh has been named senior vice president, Operations, of Uniprise. Uniprise is UnitedHealth Group’s business segment that provides network-based health and well-being, services, transactional infrastructure services, consumer services and technology support to large organizations. Cavanaugh has served as chief financial officer of Uniprise since late 1998.

Richard J. Migliori, M.D., has been named chief clinical strategist for the Ingenix Health Intelligence business unit of Ingenix. Dr. Migliori will be focused on clinical informatic strategies and applications and will report to Kevin Pearson, the chief executive officer of Ingenix Health Intelligence. Dr. Migliori joined UnitedHealthcare in 1997, as chief executive officer, UnitedHealthcare of New England and most recently served as senior vice president, Health Services Operations.
